LAS ALPUJARRAS

The Alpujarras lie on the southern flank of the Sierra Nevada in Andalucia, southern Spain. Following the re-conquest of Granada by Christians in 1492, the Moors were allowed to settle in the Alpujarras before being driven from the country subsequently.

The influence of the Berbers is extensive, in the construction of dwellings, use of irrigation, and the shaping of the landscape through terracing, crops and pasture.

Although much of the local population has since departed for the coast, the evidence of their passing and continuing presence remains.
