ORADOUR - SUR - GLANE

On 10th June 1944, a division of the Wehrmacht carried out a gratuitous act of reprisal against the population of Oradour-sur-Glane, a small town in the Limousin near Limoges. All the women and children were gathered in the church and burned to death. The men were gathered into groups and marched to various places in the town where they were shot and burned.

A total of 642 were killed. One woman and four men survived the attack.

The town of Oradour-sur-Glane remains much as it was on that day, a shrine to the memory of all who lost their lives. A new town has been built alongside.

These photographs were taken in the summer of 2009.
